Overview

rollnote documentation

rollnote is a journal for film photographers. You log your shoots (rolls), record each frame’s exposure settings, and keep a library of your gear so nothing is lost between the shutter and the lab. It is free, open source, and built to be self-hosted.

This documentation is split into three parts:

Self-hosting

Run your own instance of rollnote. Start with the self-hosting guide for a working Docker stack, then use the configuration reference to tune environment variables, generate secrets, and set up backups.

Using rollnote

The user guide walks through the app itself. Start with getting started, then dive into shoots and folders, logging frames, the exposure dials, location and maps, your equipment library, account security with 2FA and passkeys, and importing or exporting your data.

Developing

The architecture overview explains how the API and frontend fit together, and contributing covers local setup, the branch and release workflow, and how to send changes upstream.

The source lives on Forgejo across two repositories: rollnote-api (the NestJS backend) and rollnote-front (the Angular frontend). Each ships its own README and deeper docs/ for contributors.
