Why I built this.
I shoot on film and wanted to take better notes about my shoots. I tried using a pen and paper but it was too cumbersome and most of the time I was too lazy to take out my notepad and write down my settings.
I searched everywhere for something that would fit. It had to be free, simple enough to use one-handed while shooting, and available on all my devices. I found some options but none of them were right to me. I either had to pay for a subscription, download a proprietary app or it didn't have the features I needed.
The notebook you never remember to carry is the
one the app should be.
A field notebook, on purpose.
rollnote is a field notebook for analog photographers. It was built specifically for film. Every decision reflects how most film photographers actually work and how I work.
It's free because it was built to solve a personal problem, not to monetise photographers. There's no subscription, no premium tier, no feature gating. You get everything even the source code of the app.
Your data is yours. There's no reason to trap it. You can always export or back up your shoot history. And you can leave at anytime if you don't need it anymore or are not satisfied with it.
Who made it.
rollnote is a solo project by Eliott BIDAULT-HERVOUET, a software developer with a strong passion for photography. I shoot 35mm and medium format, mostly street and landscape. rollnote is the app I wished existed when I started shooting film.
If you have feedback, run into a bug, or want to suggest a feature, feel free to reach out. This is a living project and your input genuinely shapes it. You can go into the source code and open an issue on forgejo. There are instructions on how to do it properly so that anyone can help and contribute.
